The Top 20 Most Emotional Songs

The Top 20 Most Emotional Songs

By Jesse Hakinson

From Celine Dion's Titanic love song to Miley Cyrus, here are the 20 most emotional songs that you might just cry to.

1. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
Considered as one of the most emotional songs for 22 years now, it still stands that way to this day. From the 20th Century Fox movie release, Titanic, it is called "The Love Theme from Titanic". It was played at the end credits on the movie which was released 22 years ago this year. Why is it so emotional? Think about it? My father passed away 3 years ago, and when this song played on the radio, I was literally crying and bulling. It reminds me of my dad, and how we always spent time together. I try my hardest not to cry during this song, but sometimes that's not the case.

2. In My Place - Coldplay
Heard in the final scene of the first episode in the second season of the American superhero action-drama series, Smallville, it is the second most emotional song ever released. Coldplay has released many emotional songs in the past, and they still do, and about one-third of these songs on this list are actually played by Coldplay. With Coldplay writing many emotional songs in past years, they'll more than likely dominate this playlist.

3. Amsterdam - Coldplay
Yet another Coldplay, this song is even more depressing than the pervious one. I listened to this song like over a dozen times when I lost my very first job in just four and a half months time. It was very depressing, and I think you would agree. Losing a job in way less than six months is very sad, and could lead to depression, sad thoughts, or even fatigue. Listen to this song and you'll see what I mean.

4. Malibu - Miley Cyrus
This song may seem like a really upbeat song to dance to, WRONG! This song is also a emotional top-charter on this list, and literally makes me cry whatever mood I'm in. I'm not saying that it's actually emotional, but these songs, about all of them, will make me cry, and if you have any better options, you can leave your thoughts below in the comments.

5. Praying - Kesha
Making this song both a Billboard Hot 100 top-charter and emotional top-charter, it is considered one of the best emotional songs played on commercial radio in 2017. Performed by the mastermind of her #1 hit single, Tik Tok, it was created for anyone who believes that god will be there for us, whatever if there's a storm coming, or even if we are in life's most depressing moments, such as losing a loved one. The music video on YouTube also features a short cutscene at the beginning whom which Kesha, the singer, asks if God can praise her, even if she was not there for him. You can watch the music video by clicking here.

6. Let Me Love You - Mario
As always, any song with the word "Love" will probably make anyone cry or somehow be emotional, but also is considered a #1 song in late-2004 and early-2005. The near-end of the song is the most saddest, making anyone cry until they start to bull. Just listen for yourself, and you'll see what I mean.

7. Shallow - Lady Gaga w/ Bradley Cooper
Ok seriously, if you haven't seen A Star Is Born yet, you need to watch it now. The song, Shallow, from the Warner Bros film released in 2018, is considered a nice, but emotional song about the two main characters in the movie, Ally & Jackson. Performed by Lady Gaga and famous actor Bradley Cooper, I consider this song not just emotional, but also a reminder of the top-grossing and critically aclaimed film released just last year. If you haven't seen the film yet, listen to this song first, and if you love it, watch the film, seriously. If you don't like it, then no need to watch the film. If you've already seen the film, then you probably already heard this song, so if you listen to it again, and get really emotional, then be my guest.

8. Hello - Adele
Adele has written quite a few emotional songs like coldplay has, but only so much at a time. Released on the album 25 in 2015, Hello shows people how emotional people can get whenever they miss a call from their loved ones, and the next day, they discover that they either commited sucide or had a diaese.

9. I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner
As another song became a top-charter on not just the Hot 100, but also the Singles Chart in the UK, making it both #1 in the United States & Great Britian, it was considered one of the most-played emotional-themed songs in the world of 1985. It is still played on the radio, most notably K103 in Portland, which can be listened to online on iHeartRadio.

10. Clocks - Coldplay
Another song from the british rock band, it was written as a tribute performance for a 2002 concert held in New York, to raise money for the 9/11 memorial that was scheduled to be built later in the decade. While the radio edit is very emotional, the uncut version is considered the most emotional, and should be listened to in full.

11. Intro - The XX
Although techinically not considered a full-length song, it is still emotional, and could make me cry at any time. Listen to it and see what you think.

12. Broken Wings - Mr. Mister
Although Mr. Mister was not very popular back then (and they still aren't), this was one of their most emotional songs of their entire collection, and has played on many Adult Album Alternative stations in the past. Broken Wings, and take them to learn how to fly is probably yet another sad song that anyone would even bull to.

13. It Will Rain - Bruno Mars
One of Bruno's early performances, and also featured in the successful, but negatively recicved movie, Breaking Dawn Part 1 of the Twilight Saga, it is one of the most emotional songs that Bruno Mars has written of all-time.

14. A Thousand Years - Christina Perri
We all know Christina Perri's music is all emotional and everything, but this song is probably one of her top-selling songs of all-time. Also played in The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1 film, Christina Perri remains a big player in sad and emotional music.

15. 1-800-273-8255 - Logic featuring Alessia Cara & Khalid
Featuring the line, "I don't wanna cry, I don't wanna die anymore", it is one of the #1 hit singles yet again to chart the Hot 100 and the American Top 40, but also one of the first few Hip-Hop & Rap to be in an emotional mood. Although the song has the S-word in it, the playlist I made has the clean version.

16. I Won't Back Down - Tom Petty
This song was performed at the 9/11 tribute concert that occured on Septemeber 20 of 20th of that year. Although Tom Petty has passed away, his name lives on forever, and this song is considered one of his top-charting emotional songs that has been released.

17. When The Party's Over - Billie Eilish
Not just a #1 best-selling single, and most listened to album on both Spotify & Apple Music, Billie Eilish ends the party really well, but much more slowly and very emotionally.

18. Purple Rain - Prince
Featured in the dramatic motion picture starring Prince himself, Purple Rain is one of the most emotional, and longest songs that Prince has ever written for us. When you listen to it, you'll soon realize, that Purple Rain was not only a #1 hit single, but also a box-office best-seller.

19. Stay - Rihanna w/ Mikky Ekko
As yet another emotional hit-single, Stay tells a story of when someone should never leave their friends or family behind, even in a dramatic situation.

20. As Long As You Love Me - Backstreet Boys
Although this song isn't as emotional as it tends to be now, it still has references to Love and Sadness, so it remains as a emotional song, but not a top-charter like all the others. Backstreet Boys now remain with even more music, with the release of their new album, DNA, and their hit-single, Don't Go Breaking My Heart.
