What bit rate does BBC Sounds stream at?
What bit rate does BBC Sounds stream at?
If you're wondering what bit rate the BBC Sounds app/website streams at, you have visited the right page. The BBC Sounds app streams at a lossless bit rate of 384 kbps, which uses about 3 MB per minute. If you wanted to stream Radio 1's Breakfast Show with Greg James, you would use about 621 MB for the entire show. Want to listen to the latest five minute bulletin from the BBC World Service? You would only use a mere 15 MB. This applies to both the streaming radio stations and on-demand content.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
It depends. It's a good thing if you're used to listening to the 128 kbps stream on Tune In, which would use only 60 MB per hour, compared to BBC Sounds which uses three times the amount, clocked in at 180 MB per hour. So if you have a smaller data plan, might as well stick with Tune In. But if you have a 25 GB plan like me, then the BBC Sounds is the perfect choice for the best high-fidelity audio!
Is BBC Sounds available in America?
Sort of. You won't be able to download the app on your phone (Actually, you can. But it won't let you download anything (excluding podcasts), and you won't have access to BBC Sounds exclusives, such as the Radio 1 playlist. It is known as BBC iPlayer Radio.) but you can still access the BBC Sounds website on your computer at bbc.co.uk/sounds. As always, you still won't be able to download podcasts or radio programmes, but you'll be able to listen to the Radio 1 playlist, and other BBC Sounds exclusives.
Do I need a VPN to access BBC Sounds?
I don't think so, as far as I'm aware of. Right now, I have access to BBC Sounds via VPN, but I think it'll work without one just perfectly fine. Please note, I only have access to BBC Sounds, and not the actual BBC iPlayer.
